Fall leaves a dent in Sunset star's ego
By SIAN WATKINS, The Age
24 October 1996

Debra Byrne, the thin, husky voiced actor whose ear infection resulted in two preview performances of Sunset Boulevard being cancelled this week, is back on stage.

She said at the theatre yesterday she had been "quite sick", felt much better now, appreciated the support she'd received since collapsing on stage during Monday's preview, and looked forward to Saturday night's opening.

"It's just like having a baby," she laughed. "You just want to get it out."

Her fall on stage had left her with a "very dented ego". "It was quite a shock. It wasn't what I'd trained to do."

It also shocked the audience, for Norma Desmond (the ageing silent screen goddess played by Ms Byrne) fell so gracefully at the end of the first act that few of those present suspected anything until the curtain fell soon after.
